How The Emerald Triangle Got Its Name

Exclusive Video Documentation!

The world renowned Emerald Triangle was officially named by law enforcement. Many folks in the area know that part of the legend. But how? Why? Where? And who named it? Those questions remained a mystery until now.

Hear the story FIRST HAND in this exclusive video for Inside The Emerald Triangle from the officer who named it so. The video will be added to our YouTube channel eventually, made available and sharable to the public for documentation purposes, but paid subscribers get early access and Inbox delivery! Thank you for your support. Seriously, I’m beyond grateful. It helps me continue this historical preservation endeavor.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: Are you ready kids? Ay-ay Captain! Let’s go to the place where SpongeBob SquarePants creator, Stephen Hillenburg, got his inspiration for the Crabby Patty—Stars Hamburgers in Arcata, California! (There’s a Stars in Eureka, too, but Hillenburg worked at the location in Arcata, so it’s slightly more iconic.) Hillenburg attended Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt), graduating in 1984 with a degree in Natural Resources. He credits his time at HSU with opening a doorway for him into art, as well as marine biology…both contributing to his iconic show under the sea. During college, Hillenburg flipped hamburgers at Stars. They’re pretty good, too! Definitely a fun experience for SpongeBob fans. Stars is located at 1535 G St. in Arcata, open 11a-8p every day except Sunday 12-6. (tag me in pics! #norcalweedgal)

GLOSSARY: (If I’ve used a word/term not listed here, consider reading previous articles where the glossary likely explains it. I try not to repeat definitions in the glossary.)

CAMP - Acronym for Campaign Against Marijuana Planting, the U.S. federal government’s regional channel for funding their mission of cannabis eradication. Counties like Trinity didn’t have the money for what was being asked of them, they had to advocate for it. Once they started organizing and collaborating with other agencies, CAMP came around shortly thereafter.

Old Shasta - Historic mining town with gold mining ruins a museum and old buildings to explore. Home to Shorty’s Eatery, a popular restaurant stop off Highway 299 on the drive to/from Redding and Weaverville, California.

SpongeBob SquarePants - Classic Nickelodeon cartoon. If you haven’t heard of it, you’ve really missed out. It’s one of those shows that is just as funny for adults as it is for children with it’s sharp wit and relationship-based antics among friends and neighbors.

Stars Hamburgers - Located in Arcata (and Eureka), California, Stars Hamburgers was the inspiration for The Crabby Patty, SpongeBob’s place of employment.

Stephen Hillenburg - Creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, graduated from HSU (CPH) in 1984, worked at Stars Hamburgers in Arcata, California, while in college. Credits his time in Humboldt for his knowledge and inspiration in creating Nickelodeon’s hit show. So, SpongeBob’s birthplace was likely Humboldt Bay!
